As long as the mechs are set up right a long chain shouldn't be to much of a problem (though it's worth checking). If the depth of the wear, X, has reached a value equal to 10 of the dimension Y, then the sprocket. This will be seen as a polished worn strip, about the pitch circle diameter, on each of the teeth as shown in the diagram. It's better to have a chain slightly too long than too short. If you look at the faces of the sprocket teeth youll see an indication of the amount of wear that has already occurred. It really, really helps if you can provide pictures and/or video.
